Urban Resiliency Mosaic Mural with The Community Loan Fund

In partnership with the Community Loan Fund of the Capital Region, The Sheridan Hollow Neighborhood Association and the City School District of Albany, Jillian designed and facilitated the creation of a 500 square foot mosaic mural in the Sheridan Hollow Neighborhood of Albany, NY. The mural represents urban resiliency through the depiction of of locally growing flora such as Milkweed and Chicory and pollinators such as Monarch butterflies and Honeybees. Over 3000 community members made tiles, including at least partial participation from every art teacher and school in the City School District of Albany. 

This project was funded in part by a New York State Decentralization Community Arts Grant awarded by The Art Center of the Capital Region.

Breathing Lights Arts Award: South End Mosaic Mural With Avillage

 

In collaboration with Breathing Lights, Catherine Kramer and the Albany County Summer Youth Employment employees working at nonprofit partners AVillage and the RADIX Center, a series of site specific mosaics were installed on vacant buildings in the South End neighborhood of Albany. Each mosaic is a small memorial to the condemned building. Although the fate of these derelict buildings are unknown, the mosaics were places with the intention of hope for the buildings future, while also memorializing its current state. This project was made possible by the Breathing Lights Arts Awards/Bloomberg Public Art Challenge.

Roarke Center Mosaic Mural

In June 2016, Jillian hosted a 4 day long mosaic mural workshop with Avillage and community members from the South End Neighborhood of Albany (NY). Participants learned the basic mosaic techniques from start to finish while creating a 100 square foot mosaic mural in community garden at Trinity Alliance of the Capital Region.

The Roarke Center provides a variety social services for adults in Rensselaer County (NY), including an extensive art program. In collaboration with artist and educator Sr. Loretta Hoag, Jillian worked with a dynamic group of Roarke Center artist to design and create this 200 square foot mosaic mural. Every tile used in the mural was handmade by the participating artist. Many of the tiles are sentimental and include testimony and poetry written by members of the Roarke Center. This project was funded by a New York State Decentralization Community Arts Grant awarded by The Art Center of the Capital Region.

Capital Roots Community Mosaic Mural

 

Capital Roots is a nonprofit in the Capital Region of New York that promotes fresh food accessibility. This mosaic mural was designed and installed by Jillian and the community during the summer of 2015. It is located at the Capital Roots headquarters (594 River St. Troy N.Y.)  Hundreds of community members participated over a 5 month period through inclusive tile making workshops and mosaic installation.

Freedom Square at The Sanctuary for Independent Media with Isaiha Zagar

 

The Sanctuary For Independent Media is nonprofit  grassroots art center in the Capital Region of New York that promotes justice through art and activism. As part of the National Endowments for The Arts "Our Town" grant, the Sanctuary invited mosaic mural artist Isaiah Zagar to design and install Freedom Square: an 800 square foot mosaic mural art stage.  Jillian was one of the Sanctuary's Project Coordinator and facilitated the making of  hundreds of tiles by many community members through inclusive tile making workshops and the mosaic installation.
